My Human Says I Can't Tell Her When Something's Wrong. So I Started Keeping A Diary.
Three winters of 2 a.m. paw-licking, one groomer's note, and the thing that finally made her listen. By the dog.
By Moose, chocolate Lab, 35 kg · as told to the Waggle family · Oct 26, 2026
My name is Moose. I'm a chocolate Labrador. I weigh thirty-five kilos, most of it charm.
My human is wonderful. She walks me in minus twenty. She lets me on the couch when she thinks the neighbours can't see. She takes seven vitamins every morning with her coffee.
But she says one thing that drives me up the wall: "I just wish he could tell me when something's wrong."
Fine. Here's my diary.
The entries she slept through

I'm not dramatic. I'm a Lab. Labs don't complain. We just lick quietly in the dark and hope somebody notices.
Then the groomer wrote it down
The groomer noticed. Groomers always notice. She handed my human a little card at pickup.

"Hot spot behind L ear. Chewing paws. Please keep an eye on it!"
She read it in the car. Twice. I sat in the back very, very still. When a human goes quiet like that, you don't move.
So she tried everything
And I mean everything. Here's the list, in the order I suffered through it:
- New food. I'd been on the same food for years and it was totally fine. Then suddenly it wasn't.
- Oatmeal shampoo. I smelled like breakfast. Still itchy.
- Fish oil, squirted on my dinner. Our fridge smells like a fish counter now. I'd rather eat the bowl.
- The cone. We don't talk about the cone.
- Pills hidden in cheese. I found every single one. Every. Single. One.

Then one night she sat down on the kitchen floor next to me, put her hand on my back, and said the worst thing a human can say:
"He's just an itchy dog."
And she stopped looking.

Here's what nobody told her
All that stuff works on my outside. The food bowl, the shampoo, the cone. Outside, outside, outside.
But about seventy percent of a dog's immune system lives in the gut. That's where the support has to start. The itch was just where it was showing up.

That's why a new shampoo never stuck. Wrong end of the dog.
And here's the part about me
I don't take anything I don't like. Fish oil? No thank you. Pills? I will find them. Powder on my food? I will eat around it with surgical precision.

So whatever she gave me had to be something I'd actually beg for. Every single day. Because when you're supporting a dog's system from the inside, every day is the whole point. A supplement that lives in the cupboard does nothing.
And look, I'll be straight with you. This isn't medicine. If I'm properly sick, she takes me to the vet, and she should. This is the everyday bit. The bit before anything goes wrong.
Then a box showed up
Dot waggle. A small Canadian family business, right here in Montreal. They make one thing: a daily salmon chew for skin, coat and immune support, developed by a vet.

Inside each chew:
- EpiCor Pets, a postbiotic studied for its support of a balanced immune response
- Colostrum for immune health and the gut lining
- Salmon oil and salmon meal, omega-3s for skin and a shiny coat
- A prebiotic (FOS) that feeds the good bacteria in the gut
- Nettle, linseed and algae for skin and coat
She calls it a supplement. I call it a salmon treat. One to three a day, depending on your size. I'm a big boy. I get two, with breakfast.

Right next to her vitamins. Seven bottles for her. One for me. Finally.

And here's the thing. She thought she couldn't tell when something was wrong. Turns out she could. She just needed me to say it.
